My devotion to you guys is so great, I got up extra early today, because I just HAD to finish the first episode of the Grey's Anatomy premiere. (And I am not a morning person, so that was quite a feat.)
So much happened. I don't even know where to begin.
At least I know the outcome of one major cliffhanger: Meredith didn't die!
Hallelujah! Thanks for the unneeded panic attack at the end of last season, Shonda Rhimes. I figured Meredith would be OK, since we haven't heard any whisperings about Ellen Pompeo leaving this season, but I was worried all the same. With this show, you just never know.
My heart was in my throat for a large part of the episode. The usual Meredith voice-over intro was replaced with one by Richard Webber. We've seen this before—usually on episodes where that person dies. As if that wasn't enough to make me nervous, he says, "I was thinking about my white coat, and how I'm glad I have it on me now. It's the moment my life started. Seems fitting it should be on me when it ends."
Luckily, when Brooks finds Webber in the basement, we see his eyes flicker open, so we know he's still alive! But our relief is short-lived. Brooks doesn't see the electrical cord in the water, gets electrocuted and then falls and hits her head on the side of a very large generator.
I spent the next 20 minutes in a panic, thinking, "WHEN IS SOMEONE GOING TO FIND THEM!?"
Shane finally does something right in this episode—he finds them, and notices the electrical cord in the water, so thankfully we don't have a third electrocution on our hands. The hospital staff rushes to save their own, as per usual. I'm glad of this, because at least you know these two characters are going to receive great care, but it also makes me wonder who picks up the slack for the other patients? I mean, there was a mudslide at the beginning of this episode, and there were some pretty injured-looking people in the last ER scene...
At the end of the first episode, Webber is in surgery. Meredith was named his next of kin, and she decides to let Bailey operate. There are still so many questions rolling around in my mind; questions I could probably get answered in the next hour of the premiere. Sadly, I had to leave for work, so I'll be walking around today with my fingers in my ears and my eyes away from the major entertainment sites, not to hear any spoilers.
