Today has been the first truly cold day of winter here in Tennessee. While my social media accounts are being inundated with complaints by those wanting their 70-degree Christmas Day temps back, I’m basking in the glory of this cold weather.
For weeks I’ve been wearing my winter coat, on principle, even though it’s been so warm here that people have been eating outside at restaurants. Even my after-work company Christmas gathering was spent on the terrace of a hip spot downtown.
Warm weather this time of year just doesn’t compute with me, so I intend to celebrate today by spending time outside and listening to a new music mash-up.
Cold weather always reignites my desire to listen to music with a grittier sound, with western guitars akin to old favorites like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club or raspy, soulful vocals like the talented Josh Garrels. I've found some great new playlist additions in the gritty sounds of Wye Oak, Jacob Banks and Shakey Graves. While catchy beats are always a fun addition to any playlist, I search for songs that deviate from the typical summertime dance jam during cooler months, like 'The Hook' and 'Faded'--a song beloved by a friend we lost in 2015.
Without further ado, here's my latest mix of some favorites from the last couple of months.
Hope you enjoy!
